It sounds like you are early in the playthrough. There is a temporary solution to the armour issue early in the game if it is causing you that much grief. Lone wolf has tons of points and is so overpowered early that you can make fin or int 12 to be able to equip different armour types and build a balanced armour character.Lone wolf is pretty OP such that you’ll struggle to do it wrong.
